Harold's Spots

Harold has always had spots.

Until Oxpecker decides to do something about them.

Will Harold still be Harold without his spots?

An uplifting story about learning to love the skin you are in – spots and all.

Meet Harold – Life Education Trust's loveable mascot. Harold is happy until Oxpecker suggests his spots could do with an upgrade. Bright spots, tidy spots, zany whacky squirmy spots. Will Harold ever find the right spots for him?

Harold is adored by generations of New Zealand kids and adults alike. For years, with an educator in tow, he has visited schools nationwide, spreading the trust's messages about self-belief and holding your head high.

Waipa–King Country Life Education Trust has published Harold's Spots so children can have their own time with Harold, to read and enjoy, and take home to share with their families and friends.

How I wrote Harold's Spots

Waipa–King Country Life Education Trust first approached the illustrator, my good friend Deborah Hinde, about producing a book about Harold. The trust wanted a way to spread Harold's important messages further.

Deb asked me if I would write the story, and of course I was overjoyed to say 'Yes'. I knew Harold from his visits to my own children's school and agreed that his messages were important to share. Harold is already such a great character – generous, kind and positive – it would be great fun to write a story about him.

Then the character of Oxpecker popped his head up and he didn't think Harold was quite so great. He thought Harold could be improved, in particular his wonky blotchy spots! So there it was: the start of a story. All I had to do was sit back and see what happened.
